Territory

Cantina Fongaro is located in the area of Lessinia, in the municipality of Roncà, within the province of Verona. This is the easternmost valley of the City of Verona, known as the Val d’Alpone. The name comes from its most important creek -the Alpone- that is famous, above all, for its historical-paleontological heritage bound to the olive groves found in Bolca and Roncà. The area is equally well-known for the production of cherries and, of course, for its wine. The soil of our valley is perfect for Durella, the vine used for all Fongaro sparkling wines. Most of the rocks are of volcanic origin, handed down to us by underwater eruptions that occurred during the Tertiary (or Cenozoic) era. The volcanic soils are very permeable and rich in components such as phosphorus, magnesium and potassium, all of which enhance the minerality, acidity, flavour, and complexity of the wines produced with Durella grapes.

The Regional Natural Park of Lessinia

An area of more than 10,000 hectares of inestimable historical, archaeological, and naturalistic value, this is the Regional Natural Park of Lessinia and home of the Fongaro Winery. The establishment of the park dates back to 1990, but the qualities that make this territory a treasure worthy of preservation were developed over 50 million years. Enthusiasts of Palaeontology and archaeology can visit the various fossil deposits located throughout the Lessini Mountains, especially those of Bolca. Those who prefer landscapes may opt for one of the many foot paths, to admire the characteristic dolines (sinkholes), caves, or natural bridges. The rich flora and fauna of Lessinia complete the offering, creating an ideal destination for anyone looking to get in touch with the outdoors. Classic products found in this area include aromatic medicinal herbs, cherries, chestnuts, honey, alpine and farmed cheeses, sausages, salami… and, of course, excellent wines!
